sustainable development

I made two articles in french on sustainable development. They are too long and difficult to translate for me. But I found this on the net:

The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations.

The guiding principle of sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Sustainable development recognises the interdependence of environmental, social and economic systems and promotes equality and justice through people empowerment and a sense of global citizenship. Whilst we cannot be sure what the future may bring, a preferable future is a more sustainable one.

Here is a very good site to visit:    http://www.ace.mmu.ac.uk/esd/

BEDZED

Sustainable development dans F-Environnement bedzed

BedZED, which stands for Beddington Zero (fossil) Energy Development, is an ecological neighbourhood that was completed in 2000 near Sutton, a suburb located in the south of London. It consists of 90 housing units as well as 2300 m2 of offices. This pilot project aims to show that it is possible to create living and working spaces that are in line with sustainable-development principles and ideals. The site’s design was planned in such a way as to offer an enjoyable lifestyle as well as a pleasant environment for the residents. Each home includes a south-facing greenhouse which captures the sun’s heat and light. Photovoltaic solar panels produce electricity.

Very thick walls and triple-glazed windows ensure the buildings excellent insulation. Heating requirements are about 10% of what is typically required for a conventional building. A combined heat and power plant produces electricity and hot water for the homes and offices. It is powered by woodchips which come from the trimming of local trees. Rainwater is harvested and reused. Part of the neighbourhood’s waste water is collected to be treated on site.
